Marl dominated Monferrato hillsides, interlayered with bands of sandstone, provide the foundation for the 2004 Cascina Grillo Monferrato DOC Rosso Pecoranera, drawn from the same slopes used in later vintages and planted to mixed red varieties. The cooler, longer 2004 season amplified the influence of these soils, extending ripening under wide diurnal shifts and consistent slope ventilation. Vineyard work centered on manual cultivation, careful canopy alignment, and selective hand harvesting adapted to the year’s slow phenolic progression. Fermentation proceeded with native yeasts in small tanks, with varietal components vinified separately before blending to preserve structural distinctions. Maturation continued in large seasoned wood, supporting gradual integration while maintaining clarity. Within Cascina Grillo’s work, the 2004 Pecoranera offers a technically focused view of marl based Monferrato parcels interpreted through mixed plantings and restrained, long term élevage.
