2012 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Grandi Annate

Avignonesi is one of the leading wineries in Montepulciano and devoted to producing Sangiovese with minimal intervention. The estate was founded in 1974 when Adriana Avignonesi, whose family had grown grapes in the area since the 16th century, married an agronomist (soil expert). It wasn’t until the 1980s that the estate gained worldwide acclaim. Since 2009, when new ownership took over, they’ve been known for producing their wines with organic and biodynamic practices.

Avignonesi owns nine vineyards with eight of them being in Montepulciano. The different mesoclimates and soils create unique wines that provide the winery great blending options. The mostly clay soil (with some limestone) delivers different notes to the Sangiovese than their neighbor, Montalcino. Montepulciano allows the addition of up to 30% Canaiolo and Mammolo but the Grandi Annate is 100% Sangiovese.

The Grandi Annate is only produced in the best vintages when Avignoesi feels like the wine can properly express the terroir of their estate in Montepulciano. The 2012 vintage is from two vineyards, Le Badelle and Banditella. The grapes were fermented with natural yeast and left on their skins to macerate for twenty days. The wine was then aged for 18 months in French barrique which were 20% new oak and 80% second and third usage. The 2012 vintage was challenging but was saved with August rain that allowed them to delay harvest until the grapes reached perfect ripeness.

With the 2012 vintage, Avignonesi decided to reduce the time spent in oak from previous years, looking to make a fresher style of wine. Elegance and finesse are not lacking though. With ripe cherry, black fruit, leather, and a little earth, this wine is a great success from the new ownership.
