Description
Old vine terraces on porphyry based soils in northern Piedmont shape the 2014 Le Piane Vino Rosso Plinius II, a rare release produced only in select years and built around small quantities from parcels defined by altitude driven conditions and low fertility volcanic substrates. The name references Pliny the Elder, reflecting Christoph Kuenzli’s interest in connecting classical accounts of northern Italian viticulture to contemporary practice. Work in the vineyard centers on close monitoring of mature vines and staged harvesting to align ripeness across blocks. Fermentation proceeds with extended maceration in large wooden tanks, followed by many years of rest in neutral botti and then bottle before the wine is considered ready. Plinius II functions as a long term study of the area’s capacity for ageworthy, site driven wines and underscores the importance of historical vineyard rehabilitation in the modern story of Boca.
