Description
Sandy Roero soils and steep hillside exposures define the 2016 Cascina Fornace Roero Rosso Valdovato, Piedmont, Italy, produced by a small family estate north of Alba focused on sensitive farming and the redevelopment of historic parcels. The project centers on rehabilitated, previously neglected slopes with old vines rooted in low-density sands that drain quickly and naturally favor structural finesse. Because of gradient and erosion risk, the site is worked by hand with particular attention to erosion control and cover-crop management. Fruit is harvested manually in small crates and fermented slowly in concrete, chosen for thermal stability and neutral influence during fermentation. Aging continues in large casks intended to maintain clarity of structure over time. Within the estate range, Valdovato represents an exploration of Roero’s red potential and sits alongside the white bottlings as part of a broader commitment to reviving traditional mixed agriculture and documenting the character of each recovered hillside.
