Description

2017 Dominique Lafon Volnay Pinot Noir

Dominique Lafon was born into the celebrated Burgundy wine family that runs Domaine des Comtes Lafon. The estate has produced wine since the late 1800s. His father created world class wine but he didn’t farm the vines and at times the wines could be inconsistent. When Dominique took over the Domaine in the 1980s and 1990s he purchased land and farmed it himself, taking the quality of the wine to a new level. To this day he still does much of the cellaring work after the grapes have been brought in from harvest.

In 2008, Dominique began a new label simply called Dominique Lafon. Along with running another excellent winery, his contributions to the world of wine are vast. He’s introduced winemakers from Burgundy to Oregon where partnerships have resulted in several excellent Oregon wines, including Evening Land and Lingua Franca. Fellow Burgundians who own vineyards but lack the capital for a winery use a facility he’s partnered in to make wine in a custom crush agreement. He’s also one of the few winemakers in Burgundy to excel at making both white and red wines.

The winery Dominique Lafon owns 4.5 hectares in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay, and Beaune. Technically he’s viewed as a négociant but almost all his wines are made from vineyards he owns or he’s contracted with for years. He completes every step of the winemaking process at Château de Bligny.

The white wines come from Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and St-Véran in Mâconnais. The reds are from the Premier Crus Les Epenottes in Beaune, Les Lurets in Volnay, and this village level wine, also from Volnay, one of the three villages in the Côte de Beaune exclusively known for making excellent Pinot Noir, along with Pommard and Blangy. The appellation is sought-after for its smooth, delicate Pinot Noirs. Red or blue fruits are common as well as smoke, herbs, and cocoa. But the real treat often comes from some time in the bottle, where Volnay wines take on spice and gamey notes that are worth some patience in the cellar.
