Description

At the center of the Hengst Grand Cru in Wintzenheim, Domaine Josmeyer Alsace Grand Cru Riesling Hengst 2018 is an Alsace Riesling from France drawn from one of the estate’s principal limestone-influenced sites. The domaine was founded in 1854 by Aloyse Meyer and is now directed by sisters Céline and Isabelle Meyer, following Jean Meyer’s work and the family’s move toward organic and biodynamic viticulture. The wine comes from three nearby parcels, where roughly 50-year-old vines stand on south to southeast-facing slopes reaching about 360 meters. The 53-hectare Grand Cru is marked by brown calcareous, sandstone, and clay soils associated with Oligocene conglomerates, with Muschelkalk limestone mixed with clay. Grapes are hand harvested and sorted, then slowly pressed before fermentation in traditional wooden casks, with cellar work guided by parcel identity rather than technical correction. Within the Josmeyer range, Hengst serves as a Grand Cru Riesling centered on site distinction, family continuity, and biodynamic vineyard management.
