Description

Mainly selected from Clos Windsbuhl Pinot Gris, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2018 is a Vin d’Alsace white wine from Alsace, France, made entirely from Pinot Gris. The Humbrecht family has cultivated vines in Alsace since 1620, and Domaine Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 through the union of the Zind and Humbrecht families; Olivier and Margaret Humbrecht took over in 1989, with Pierre-Émile joining the domaine in 2019. Roche Calcaire is primarily the second selection of Pinot Gris from Clos Windsbuhl, with possible contributions from Heimbourg and Clos Jebsal depending on parcel selection. The Windsbuhl vines used for this cuvée were largely planted between 1988 and 1992 on Muschelkalk limestone, marl, and sandstone, within a high Alsace site around 350 meters, with south to south-east exposures and 15 to 40 percent slopes. Farming is certified organic and biodynamic. Grapes are hand harvested, vinified by gravity without chaptalization or fining, aged on lees, and bottled in January 2020. The cuvée places younger limestone Pinot Gris material within Zind-Humbrecht’s work on parcel hierarchy and dry Alsace vinification.
