Description

From the Roncaglie MGA in the municipality of Barbaresco, the 2021 Vietti Barbaresco Roncaglie is a Barbaresco DOCG from Piedmont, Italy, made entirely from Nebbiolo. Vietti was founded in 1873 in Castiglione Falletto and is now owned by the Krause family, with Eugenio Palumbo listed as winemaker in current importer materials. The Roncaglie site, formerly labeled Masseria before that name was removed from the label with the 2020 vintage, sits at about 240 to 280 meters and carries a name linked to roncaleis, a Latin reference to a steep road. Vines average roughly 30 to 34 years, are Guyot trained at about 4,600 plants per hectare, and grow on calcareous and clayey soils with Sant’Agata marls, south to southwest exposure, and organic farming. Grapes are destemmed and gently crushed, fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel, macerated using the submerged cap technique, completed through malolactic fermentation in wood, and aged about 30 months in large oak casks and selected barriques. The cuvée places Barbaresco within Vietti’s broader work on named Nebbiolo sites across southern Piedmont.
