Description
Calcareous marl with sandy layers shapes the hillside parcels behind the 2022 Marchesi di Barolo Moscato d’Asti Zagara, Piedmont, Italy, sourced from Moscato Bianco grown around Barolo and Castiglione Falletto where these soils help moderate vigor. The estate’s records of these slopes extend back more than a century, reflecting how soil depth and exposure influence gradual ripening and aromatic development. Vineyard work emphasizes early-season pruning and canopy regulation to manage humidity and encourage airflow in this part of the Langhe. During 2022, sugar and acid balance was monitored closely across parcels, and harvest was carried out by hand in multiple passes to align maturity with the low-pressure sparkling method typical for Moscato d’Asti. Fermentation proceeded in temperature-controlled tanks to retain natural sweetness and preserve structural clarity. Zagara continues the estate’s long-running examination of how marl-dominant Langhe hillsides shape Moscato within a historical framework.
