Description
From the western bench of Rutherford, Scarecrow Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is a California Cabernet Sauvignon from the United States produced from estate fruit at the J.J. Cohn Estate. The vineyard was planted in 1945 after Inglenook head John Daniel Jr. encouraged Joseph Judson Cohn to establish Cabernet on his Rutherford land; the modern label is led by Bret Lopez, with Celia Welch as winemaker and Michael Wolf managing viticulture. The estate covers 23.86 planted acres, largely Cabernet Sauvignon, including about two acres of original 1945 vines. Elevations run from 225 to 300 feet, and soils range from Bale clay loam and Pleasanton loam to gravelly loam near the base of the Mayacamas, with varied exposure, trellising, and rootstock. In 2022, fruit was hand harvested at night, destemmed, optically sorted, fermented in small batches, kept about 21 days on skins, and aged 21 months in 65 percent new French oak before bottling without fining or filtration. The cuvée is the principal Scarecrow bottling, centered on old-vine Rutherford Cabernet and family stewardship.
