Description
From high-altitude sites in Jumilla’s Valle de la Aragona, Bodegas El Nido Clio 2023 is a DO red from Murcia, Spain, composed of 70 percent Monastrell and 30 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery was created in the early 2000s as a collaboration between the Gil family, linked to Bodegas Juan Gil, and Australian winemaker Chris Ringland, with a small-production model focused on old Monastrell and selected international varieties. Fruit comes from vineyards that include 32 hectares of very old, low-yielding Monastrell and 12 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1986. Sources place the vines at about 1,300 to 2,300 feet, with stony limestone soils and north to north-east orientations. Grapes are harvested in small baskets, selected, and fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts. Maturation takes place for about 23 to 24 months in new French and American oak. Clio positions the estate around Monastrell heritage, Cabernet blending, and extended barrel élevage.
