Description
From the right bank of the Serein, adjacent to the Grand Cru slope, the 2023 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre is a Burgundy white from France made entirely from Chardonnay within the Chablis Premier Cru appellation. William Fèvre gave the family estate its modern form in 1959 after generations of Chablis vine growing; since January 2024 the domaine has belonged to Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite, with Didier Séguier remaining a central technical figure. The cuvée draws from 2.24 hectares across Pied d’Aloup, Montée de Tonnerre, and Chapelot, with exposures ranging from southwest to southeast. Soils are Kimmeridgian marl and marly limestone, and Chapelot includes vines planted in 1936. Farming is organic. Grapes are handled by gravity, pneumatically pressed, lightly settled, then fermented in stainless steel and oak, followed by 19 months of aging, including five to six months on lees in oak for 35 percent of the cuvée. This bottling connects Fèvre’s parcel separation with Chablis site hierarchy and restrained élevage.
