From estate parcels across Verzy Grand Cru, Mouzon-Leroux Champagne Brut Nature L’Atavique Tradition Verzy Grand Cru NV is a non-vintage Champagne from France drawn from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the Grande Montagne de Reims. The Mouzon-Leroux family traces winegrowing in the village to 1776, and Sébastien Mouzon, the ninth generation, took responsibility for the domaine in 2008. Fruit comes from Verzy sites where calcareous clay and calcareous loam over Lower Campanian chalk and flint, northeastern exposures, and Grand Cru slope positions define the viticultural setting. The estate farms about 8.5 hectares in 65 blocks, using biodynamic methods certified by Demeter. L’Atavique is assembled from a current harvest with reserve wines, with recent releases based on 70 percent Pinot Noir and 30 percent Chardonnay and finished at a very low dosage of around 1 gram per liter. Fermentation and élevage are managed to preserve vineyard origin, connecting the cuvée to the domaine’s focus on inherited parcels, soil work, and Verzy as a long-term family project.
