Description
Consecutive vintages are central to the Native9 intent, and the 2013 Rancho Ontiveros Vineyards Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir Native9 extends that lens by tracking a season that began cooler and moved toward gradual ripening as the year progressed. The marine terrace setting remains defined by sandy loam and older seabed derived formations, while steady airflow through the valley required ongoing canopy adjustments to maintain vine balance and protect cluster development. Farming continued with minimal inputs and an emphasis on preserving soil structure as the vines moved further into maturity. Harvesting was carried out selectively to accommodate subtle exposure differences among blocks, then native yeast fermentations were conducted in small lots to allow close monitoring of extraction. Élevage followed in barrels chosen for transparency and long term integration rather than immediate impact. As part of the Native9 series, the 2013 vintage contributes to a longitudinal record of the ranch, supporting James Ontiveros’s broader effort to understand how incremental seasonal variation plays out within a consistent farming and cellar philosophy.
