Description
Steep slate hillside vineyards inform the 2020 Selbach-Oster Mosel Spätburgunder Trocken, a red wine produced by an estate historically centered on Riesling but attentive to Pinot Noir in select sites. The vineyards are rooted in blue and gray slate that retain daytime warmth and manage limited water availability, supporting gradual maturation in a cool valley context. Vineyard work is carried out by hand, with canopy adjustments and erosion conscious soil practices adapted to the slopes. Grapes are harvested manually, sorted, and destemmed before fermentation in stainless steel or small open vats, where extraction is moderated to suit Pinot Noir’s structure. Aging follows in a combination of stainless steel and neutral wood to preserve definition. Within the Selbach-Oster range, this cuvée illustrates the estate’s effort to interpret Mosel terroir through a red variety using the same disciplined vineyard and cellar approach applied to its core Riesling holdings.
