Description
A high, wind-exposed limestone plateau between Flörsheim-Dalsheim and Biebelnheim anchors the 2021 Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier Riesling Großes Gewächs Frauenberg, one of the estate’s most exacting sites. Massive limestone bedrock sits close to the surface with minimal topsoil, creating rapid drainage and naturally low vigor while extending the season through slower, more incremental ripening. Constant airflow and elevation moderate warmth and sharpen the impact of vintage variation, conditions met through fully manual work under certified organic and biodynamic principles, strict yield limitation, and canopy decisions tailored to an austere water regime. Fruit is harvested selectively and pressed as whole clusters before spontaneous fermentation in large neutral oak casks, allowing gradual development without temperature manipulation. An extended lees period supports stability and integration prior to bottling. Frauenberg holds a central place in the Battenfeld-Spanier portfolio, translating limestone intensity through a disciplined Grosses Gewächs framework and a deliberately unforced cellar approach.
