From micro-parcels around Felanitx, the 2023 Ànima Negra ÀN/2 is a red wine from Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, Spain, released under IGP Illes Balears and made from 65 percent Callet, 20 percent Mantonegro-Fogoneu, and 15 percent Syrah. Ànima Negra was founded in 1994 at the Son Burguera estate, with Miquel Àngel Cerdá and Pere Obrador central to a project focused on Mallorcan varieties and island viticulture. The vineyards comprise about 150 micro-parcels within 10 kilometers of the bodega, with old bush vines, Mediterranean exposure, calcareous silt with iron oxide, northwestern exposure for this bottling, and an elevation around 330 feet. Grapes are hand harvested in 15-kilogram boxes, then sorted manually and optically. Fermentation takes place with selected native yeasts in stainless steel and cement, followed by malolactic fermentation in those vessels and 12 months in French and American oak barriques. ÀN/2 serves as the estate’s regional blend, linking local grape preservation with broader Mallorca sourcing.
