Influenced by Pacific breezes and marked diurnal shifts across the granitic foothills of northern Baja, the 2023 Bichi Baja California Red Wine Listán is produced by a family-run Tecate project founded by the Tellez family, who began recovering historic vineyards in the early 2010s. Their work centers on locating and documenting old-vine parcels scattered across the region, with this cuvée sourced from dry-farmed Listán rooted in decomposed granite and sandy loam. Low fertility soils and meaningful slope contribute to modest yields, and farming follows traditional practice focused on preserving vine age while avoiding synthetic inputs. In the cellar, fermentations proceed with native yeasts in open-top vessels, and aging typically continues in neutral containers to keep the vineyard material clear. This bottling sits within Bichi’s broader effort to safeguard regional heritage, showing how recovered field sites and restrained winemaking can frame a historical reading of Baja’s viticultural landscape.
